Get to Know the Sakon Nakhon Model Boosting Value of Thai Herbs and Generating Over 110 Million Baht Annually from Thai Massage

Sakon Nakhon is known as the “Herbal Medicine Capital” thanks to its diverse local herbs used in herbal medicine production. The province hosts WHO GMP-certified factories that generate over 26 million baht annually from herbal products.

Additionally, the region has developed Thai massage health services, focusing on relief for seven conditions: muscle and fascia pain, frozen shoulder, trigger finger, hip pain from nerve compression, herniated disc pressing on nerves, hemiplegia/paralysis, and knee pain. Traditional techniques like sen-tapping and sen-scraping are promoted as local wisdom for therapy and relaxation.

Enhancing service capacity with modern technology, Sakon Nakhon Hospital is one of the Northeast’s facilities offering cancer radiotherapy using two Linear Accelerator (LINAC) machines. These machines serve up to 1,069 patients annually by precisely targeting cancer cells with high-energy radiation, minimizing side effects and eliminating the need for surgery.

Promoting disease screening for public health under the policy “Thai People Far from Disease and Health Hazards,” Sakon Nakhon has conducted comprehensive screenings, including cervical cancer for 9,394 women aged 30-60, colorectal cancer for 10,394 people, and hepatitis B and C for 41,967 individuals-covering over 80 percent of the target groups.

The “Sakon Nakhon Model” exemplifies the integration of local wisdom, herbal medicine, and modern medical technology to sustainably develop the health economy. It supports income generation, health promotion, and quality of life improvement for people in the region.
