Cabinet Approves Designation of Thai Cats as National Identity

The Cabinet has approved the designation of Thai cats as a national identity in the category of companion animals, a move aimed at promoting purebred Thai cats, safeguarding Thailand’s ownership of native breeds, and expanding economic value through related creative industries.

Government Spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat stated that the Cabinet’s decision aligns with previous national identity recognitions between 1964 and 2024, including the Thai elephant as the national animal, the Thai fighting fish as the national aquatic animal, the Naga as the national legendary creature, and the wai as the national gesture symbolizing Thai greeting and respect.

According to the National Identity Committee (NIC), historical records and genetic studies confirm that Thai cats possess distinctive physical and behavioral traits that clearly differentiate them from other breeds. Thai cats have been present in Thai society for centuries and are closely associated with local beliefs, cultural traditions, and daily life. Their uniqueness has gained international recognition, with some foreign breeders attempting to register purebred Thai cat lines and establish global breed standards.

Currently, only five purebred Thai cat breeds remain: the Suphalak, Korat, Wichien Maat, Konja, and Khao Manee. The government considers the official designation of Thai cats as a national identity an important step in raising public awareness, supporting conservation efforts, and promoting unified standards for purebred Thai cats. The initiative is also intended to protect Thailand’s rights over these native breeds, prevent attempts at foreign registration, and create opportunities to enhance economic value and develop related creative industries. The proposal has been reviewed and endorsed by the Ministry of Culture.
