On January 6, 2026, Major General Winthai Suvaree, Army spokesperson, stated that at 07:40 AM, the Suranaree Task Force, 2nd Army Area, reported that an unidentified weapon was fired from the Cambodian side into Thai territory at Hill 469, Nam Yuen District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. Upon further investigation, it was confirmed to be a mortar ammunition fired from Cambodia, resulting in one Thai soldier sustaining minor injuries from shrapnel.
Afterward, the local unit was contacted by the Cambodian side, which claimed that the incident was not intentional but rather a mistake made during their personnel’s operations.
The Thai military unit in the area issued a warning to Cambodia to exercise caution and emphasized that if such errors occur again, Thailand may be compelled to carry out defensive countermeasures in accordance with the rules of engagement and proportional use of force. Cambodia was urged to strictly adhere to ceasefire measures.
The Army spokesperson further stated that the Royal Thai Army remains prepared and has contingency plans for all possible scenarios to safeguard national sovereignty and ensure the safety of Thai citizens and their property along the Cambodian border. At present, the situation is under close monitoring and surveillance.
The public was reassured to have confidence in the Royal Thai Army’s management of the border situation. The current situation is not considered alarming, and no further use of weapons has been detected in other areas. Residents along the border can continue their daily lives as usual.
