Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul met with Nippon Steel Corporation executives to discuss upgrading Thailand’s steel sector toward green industry standards, while reinforcing industrial product quality controls and support for domestic manufacturers.
During the talks, the Thai government reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the domestic steel industry through cleaner and more sustainable production methods. A key focus is accelerating the transition to Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology, which uses recycled scrap steel and produces lower carbon emissions than conventional steelmaking. The move is expected to improve industrial standards, reduce environmental impacts, and support Thailand’s long-term green industry strategy.
The government also emphasized the importance of ensuring appropriate steel standards for different construction uses, particularly in public buildings and major infrastructure projects, to strengthen safety and reliability. In addition, officials discussed trade measures to protect domestic steel producers, including anti-dumping policies currently under consideration to address unfair imports and maintain competitiveness for Thai manufacturers.
A third major topic was scrap steel management and circular economy development. Thailand aims to expand domestic demand for recycled steel materials and promote investment in recycling systems. Nippon Steel expressed support for the initiative and proposed greater use of locally sourced scrap to support the transition to environmentally friendly steel production.
The Prime Minister said the partnership with Japan reflects Thailand’s broader strategy to modernize industrial standards, improve investment conditions, and enhance long-term competitiveness, while strengthening bilateral economic ties between the two countries.
