Thai Government Highlights Phanom Phrai Bun Bang Fai Festival as a Powerful Cultural Soft Power Blending Faith and Community Harmony

The Thai Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting traditional Thai festivals and culture as a sustainable economic and tourism driver, leveraging the nation's unique cultural Soft Power. This is particularly underscored during Visakha Bucha Day, a major Buddhist occasion that brings communities together to honor the teachings of the Buddha while preserving religious values, local heritage, and community unity.

Captain Phatdarasmi Thongsaluaykorn, Deputy Government Spokesperson, highlighted the annual Bun Bang Fai Festival of Phanom Phrai District in Roi Et Province for 2026 as a prime example of a major northeastern tradition that reflects deep-rooted culture, local wisdom, and communal beliefs passed down through generations. Originating from collective community faith and religious merit-making, the festival has evolved into an internationally recognized cultural event.

The spokesperson emphasized that the "Bang Fai"(rocket) are no longer just symbols of traditional rain-making rituals. Instead, they represent a living cultural heritage that intertwines the local way of life with Buddhism, serving as a hub for traditional craftsmanship, performing arts, and multi-generational community collaboration.

The government views "Bun Bang Fai Festival” as a benchmark for utilizing cultural and spiritual capital in the modern era. Coinciding with Visakha Bucha Day, the festival presents a premier opportunity to showcase the "Thai Buddhist Way of Life" and distinct local identities to the global stage. Captain Phatdarasmi concluded that this heritage is not exclusive to the northeastern people but belongs to the entire nation, acting as a global Soft Power asset capable of distributing tourism revenue to grassroots communities while instilling cultural pride in the younger generation.
