Girls Can Excel in STEM Too! UNICEF and IPST Create Equal Opportunities

At the Ban Nam Dip Community School in Mae Hong Son, a group of girls is proving that girls can learn science just as enjoyably and successfully as boys, through the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) project supported by UNICEF and IPST (Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology).

 

Jaruwann and her friends are learning science outside the classroom through hands-on activities, such as analyzing paddy field soil and conducting experiments in the lab. They not only gain scientific knowledge, but also develop teamwork, problem-solving, and analytical skills, which are crucial 21st-century skil.


This project not only focuses on providing scientific knowledge, but also emphasizes creating gender equality in accessing STEM education, especially for girls in rural areas and small schools who often have fewer opportunities than boys. UNICEF and IPST collaborate to develop curricula and teaching materials suitable for children and train teachers to effectively teach science.

 

The results of this project are very clear. Children have more self-confidence, dare to ask questions and find answers on their own. They can apply the knowledge gained to their daily lives, and most importantly, they feel fun in learning science.


The stories of these girls demonstrate that providing equal opportunities to access STEM education can greatly change the lives of children. UNICEF and IPST will continue to support these projects so that every Thai child has the opportunity to learn and develop to their full potential.
