Ancient Thai Khmer Art “Prasat Phanom Rung”
Prasat Phanom Rung Historical Park is located on top of Mount Phanom Rung, an extinct volcano in Ta Pek Sub-district, Chaloem Phra Kiat District, Buriram Province. It is one of the most beautiful and important ancient Khmer art sites in Thailand. The name “Phanom Rung” comes from the Khmer language that “Wan Rung” means vast mountain. This word appears in the stone inscription of the Khmer script found at Prasat Phanom Rung.
Prasat Hin Phanom Rung is one of the most famous Khmer stone castles in Thailand. It is one of the most important tourist attractions of Buriram Province and is considered an important symbol of Buriram Province.
The interesting and amazing thing of this Phanom Rung Historical Park is the wonderful phenomenon of sunlight shining through 15 gates that in 1 year there will be 4 days when the sun rises and sets through all 15 gates in the same line. Sunrise goes through the gate 2 times during 3-5 April and 9-11 September, sunset goes through the gate 2 times during 5-7 March and 6-8 October every year.
It is considered a highlight that tourists should not miss, with the gates of the park open for tourists to enter the area from 5:30 a.m. and must pay entrance fees to the historical site according to the regulations.
At present, Prasat Hin Phanom Rung is in the process of being considered as a World Heritage Site as well as the Prasat Hin in the Rachamankha group.
