Road Transport Cooperation between Thailand and Cambodia

As neighboring countries, Thailand and Cambodia have multidimensional cooperation through their many links, one of which is the field of road linkage. One major example is the signing of the Second Amendment to the Memorandum of Understanding on the Exchange of International Traffic Rights and Aranyaprathet-Poipet Border Crossing Point.

Thailand and Cambodia have signed Amendment No. 2 to the Memorandum of Understanding on the Exchange of Traffic Rights for Transboundary Transport at the Aranyaprathet-Poipet border crossing point to increase the Thai-Cambodian cross-border road transport permit for goods transport and non-Cambodian passenger transport through the Aranyaprathet-Poipet border crossing point from the original number of 40 to not more than 150.

The preparation of a bilateral road transport agreement between Thailand and Cambodia still has outstanding issues to discuss, such as the routing of buses due to concerns about safety issues and control of tracking vehicles entering Thailand, and they have not been able to reach a conclusion. However, there are currently two bus routes between Thailand and Cambodia: 1. Bangkok – Aranyaprathet – Poipet – Battambang – Phnom Penh, and 2. Bangkok – Aranyaprathet – Poipet – Siem Reap.

The road is currently connected to the Thai side at Aranyaprathet. The Thai border was opened in May 2022 and is constructing the new Aranyaprathet Customs Development Project (Baan Nong Ian - Sotungchap). It is planned to open in 2023.
