Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a compound extracted from cannabis, which has been studied for its numerous health benefits, including seizure control, pain management, nausea and vomiting relief for chemotherapy patients, and appetite stimulation in HIV patients. Currently, the World Health Organization has classified CBD as a non-addictive substance, although cannabis is still categorized as a Schedule 1 drug, indicating its potential misuse despite its medicinal benefits.
Thailand has started to incorporate CBD extract into some cosmetic products, most of which are limited to oil-based forms, due to the good solubility of CBD in oil but its separation or precipitation in water. Research and development of nanocarriers for the delivery of CBD extracts present an opportunity for Thai consumers to use new forms of CBD extract products.
Dr. Katawut Namdee, a researcher at the Nano Medicine Research Team, the Nano Encapsulation Research Group, the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), explains that the team has developed a process to encapsulate CBD extract particles with lipid particles using nanoencapsulation technology to overcome the weaknesses of CBD extract, enhancing its
Pharmacological activity of the CBD extract, reducing the quantity of CBD extract needed in product development, cutting production costs, and lowering the risk for users who may be exposed to high amounts of the substance, which could lead to irritation. This will be beneficial when high amounts of CBD extract are required for the development of disease treatments in the future.
Lipid particle encapsulation enhances the water solubility properties of CBD extract, enabling manufacturers or product developers to use CBD in serum or toner cosmetics. These products have a light texture that quickly penetrates the skin, providing a comfortable skin sensation suitable for daily use, more so than heavy products that absorb into the skin slowly. CBD extract is a key ingredient that is both a potent antioxidant, slowing down cell degradation or the onset of wrinkles, and helps reduce inflammation, heal wounds, and increase collagen fiber in the skin.
Another industry where CBD extract has significant potential growth is the health and wellness travel sector, as Thailand has legalized the use of cannabis for medical purposes. If businesses can develop specific formulations that are effective, it could be a strength that attracts tourists to use their services.
