The Thai government pushes mangrove reforestation projects to earn carbon credits and to address the environmental issue of forest resource conservation and preservation.
Thailand ratified the framework of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change and the Tokyo Protocol on November 1, 2021. Moreover, at the World Leaders Summit the Prime Minister, as the head of the Thai delegation, made a statement insisting that Thailand places the utmost importance on addressing climate change and is ready to upgrade its operations towards achieving carbon neutrality goals by 2050 and net zero carbon emissions by 2065. Therefore, relevant agencies are accelerating measures to respond to and address climate change. Additionally, the government seeks cooperation between the public, private, and local sectors, in strengthening greenhouse gas reduction to create sustainable growth in a climate-friendly society, and reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions, in accordance with the spirit of the global community, as reflected in the Paris Agreement.
At present, the Ministry of Natural Resources has predicted the absorption of net greenhouse gasses in the forest sector and land use in the amount of 120 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2580. It implemented a mangrove reforestation project to earn carbon credits, with the goal to increase mangrove forest area by 300,000 rai (48,000 hectares) within 10 years, between 2022 and 2031.
