The Chong Mek Checkpoint, located in Sirindhorn District of Ubon Ratchathani Province, is a charming southern Isan town bordering Laos. It is the only land border crossing in the northeastern region that allows direct travel to Laos, while other crossings require navigating the Mekong River. Here, you will find shops selling goods imported from Laos, and if you cross to the Lao side, you'll discover duty-free stores. The border area is home to the Chong Mek Walking Street, where you can stroll, shop, and indulge in local cuisine. Particularly vibrant during the evenings of Saturday and Sunday, a variety of goods, both consumables and non-consumables, are available for purchase.
About 20 kilometers from the Chong Mek Checkpoint, there's a tourist spot we'd love to recommend, the Sirindhorn Wararam Phu Prao Temple, or commonly known as the Temple of Illuminated Murals. Perched on a hill in Sirindhorn District, it replicates the environment of the Himmapan Forest or Khao Krailat. The temple's golden Ubosot, or Ordination Hall, stands majestically with green illuminative murals of the Kalpapruek tree at the back, visible only at dusk. If you're lucky, you might see the illuminations encircling the Ubosot during the dark moon nights. These mesmerizing Buddhist art pieces leave a profound impression on all who visit.
Furthermore, as the temple is located on a hill, it provides breathtaking views of the Mekong River, the Laos shore, and the Chong Mek checkpoint. It is truly a beautiful sight to behold.
