The Mae Sai Crossing is located at the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge No. 1, in Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province, linking with Tachileik Province in Myanmar. This crossing is renowned as a bustling border market, frequented by Thais, Myanmarese, and other ethnic minorities, who visit to purchase consumer goods. Moreover, following its closure during the COVID-19 pandemic, the border crossing has now reopened, enabling travel to Tachileik from 06:30 to 18:00. There is no need to produce a border crossing document - a national identity card or any other government-issued card will suffice. However, certain goods are not permitted to be brought into Thailand, such as wildlife products, alcohol, foreign cigarettes, and pornographic media.
The range of goods on sale at the Mae Sai market is impressively diverse, encompassing various gems such as colored gemstones, rubies, and jade, along with electrical appliances, fashionable clothing, accessories, shoes, and assorted bags. Additionally, dried seafood, food, and famous northern fruit shops selling lychee, plums, apples, among other fruits, are also available. Visitors to Mae Sai should not miss the opportunity to stop by here, whether to buy souvenirs for themselves or gifts for their loved ones.
