Get to know "Night Museum," a nighttime museum experience at the event “150 Years of Thai Museums: Siam Civilized - A Passage to Wisdom,” celebrating the 150th anniversary of the establishment of Thailand's first public museum at the National Museum Bangkok from September 16-18, 2024. The event featured many special activities.
Looking back before the establishment of public museums in Thailand, the origins of museums began in 1853 during the reign of King Rama IV, characterized by an exhibition room for royal collections. King Chulalongkorn gathered artifacts and important items from all regions to display in the Rajakru Pavilion within the Grand Palace. Later, during the reign of King Rama V, he initiated public access by organizing exhibitions in a museum that opened for the first time on September 19, 1874, during his birthday celebrations, allowing 80,000 people to experience the museum.
The event “150 Years of Thai Museums: Siam Civilized” not only celebrates the grandeur of Thai museums but also provides an opportunity for younger generations to engage with history and cultural heritage that have been passed down through generations. It presents new knowledge and experiences for visitors of all ages. Additionally, Night Museum is a particularly interesting activity as it opens for nighttime visits and creates a different and enchanting atmosphere. This event serves as an important opportunity to showcase the progress of Thai society from past to present, learning history conveyed through museums while promoting understanding of cultural heritage among both Thais and foreigners.
