Chanthaburi has an old community that is more than 300 years old and has become a well-known tourist attraction of the province.
The waterfront community or the Chanthaboon waterfront community is an old community over 300 years old, located on Sukhaphiban Road. The first road of Chanthaburi province has a route about 1 kilometer long. The riverside community is a combination of 3 communities: Tha Luang community, Talat Klang community, and Talat Lang community. It was a multicultural area as it was a trading center at that time, reflected in the arts and architecture of the community's houses, shrines, and temples. The Chanthaboon Riverside Community is located along the Chanthaburi River, which was first called in 2009 by a new name.
An historical waterfront neighborhood from the Rama 5 era, the way of life of the locals, and the area's historic buildings, stores, and restaurants are its main attractions. As is customary in the Chanthaboon waterfront neighborhood, no shop stands out or is incongruous with the surroundings. Instead, it merges seamlessly with the ambiance.
Nowadays, it has become an important tourist attraction in Chanthaburi Province, starting from the foot of the Wat Chan Bridge in a line until reaching the lower market community in the area called Pier Chang Building. Most of them are residences and shops of the community that are almost a hundred years old, built since the reign of King Rama V. It looks like an ancient shop house with delicate and beautiful carved wood patterns on the shutters and corners of the building, which can also be found in the style of gingerbread houses mixed with because the people of Chanthaburi were influenced by trading with foreigners during the reign of King Rama V. The carvings made by Chanthaburi artisans are distinctive, especially the carving of the windhole, which features a bas-relief of a tiger’s head inserted between the vine’s branches. This carving is regarded as being from Chanthaburi’s historical district because of its sharp pattern that is concealed by its delicate carving.
Along with its stunning architecture, Chanthaboon Riverside also oozes the attractiveness of a straightforward, tranquil, and sociable way of life. There are stores selling regional goods, souvenirs, and traditional sweet and savory meals that travelers can sample on both sides of the route.
