       Many Thai wisdom products are produced from local wisdom, but the products that can apply for Geographical Indication (GI) registration must be the products that have a relationship between the product and the source of production.

       GI products are products that create local identity, there is only one and it’s considered intellectual property. from the relevance reflected by Local culture, characteristics of the terrain, climate that affects the characteristics of the product, having a clear production area and using the main raw materials from the area, having the quality or characteristics of the product that is different from the same product produced from Elsewhere, quality is set and there is a clear inspection control process and the product is reputable, accepted by consumers.

       When community products are registered as a Geographical Indication or GI, the benefits to be gained are the protection of the name of the product as the exclusive right of the registered community, the product that cannot be imitated as it is considered as an offense under the Geographical Indication Act.

        GI products increase the value of the product, distributors can use the Thai GI logo as a marketing tool. The uniqueness associated with an unparalleled geographical location makes consumers willing to pay a higher price. According to the data, the prices of products in the GI-registered category increased on average by 24-54% compared to pre-registered prices.

         Opportunity to go international, gaining support for international registrations is another way to increase the opportunity to expand the product market wider. Countries in the world such as Europe, the USA, and Japan are interested in GI products as premium products, because of the recognition of quality, and creates more competitive opportunities.

         In addition, upgrading GI products also helps support community tourism, creates opportunities for the development of community producers, and helps build strength and unity for local development.
