Goals of driving the BCG model - Medical devices

       Driving BCG in the field of medical devices is one of the government policies to move Thailand towards Thailand 4.0. It is a framework for developing Thailand’s medical device industry in 2021-2025, which will lead to achieving the desired goal: to “increase the purchase of medical devices from the Thai innovation account, so that at least 30% of products are obtained from innovative research and domestic production, or generate income and economic impact of approximately 40,000 million baht within 5 years.” This will be accomplished by relying on science, technology, and innovation mechanisms (STI) to produce medical devices in Thailand that meet high standards and are recognized by doctors and the public. It will reduce the import of medical devices from foreign countries and elevate the competitiveness of the industrial sector, especially SMEs, as well as diversifying opportunities and reducing social disparities in access to standardized medical devices.

The main objectives are as follows:
1) To add value to the domestic medical device manufacturing industry to support the medical hub policy;

2) To enhance research and innovation capabilities for the Thai manufacturing and service sectors by supporting the creation of Thai medical device products that meet international standards and support the creation of public health security;

3) To increase the opportunity for Thai people to have access to low-priced and standardized medical devices, which will reduce inequality.

There are five strategies for realizing the objectives:

Strategy 1: To create a balance of supply and demand with reverse engineering innovation mechanism;

Strategy 2: To prepare to enter the specification/ standard/ price by expanding the results through innovation mechanisms, in accordance with the needs of the public sector, and promote the government market through the Thai Innovation List;

Strategy 3: To reduce import duty on parts and raw materials used in medical devices to 0% and support the development of technology localization;

Strategy 4: To develop the potential of research and innovation personnel, including operators;

Strategy 5: To provide hosts with adequate resource support to achieve integration and networking between stakeholders.
