Lifestyle Tourism: Visiting and Experiencing Cloth Weaving in Lamphun Province

Lamphun is one of a number of cities with a mixture of ethnicities and cultures. If you would like to experience a traditional way of life, we recommend Ban Nong Ngeuak community, a small community in Pha Sang District where the identity, traditions, and lifestyle of the ancestors, the "Yong" people, who migrated from Myanmar over 200 years ago, are still present.

When you visit this village, you can take a tram to have a good look around and arrive at the “learning point,” where you can learn the skill from a group of manual cotton weavers who inherited the trade more than 100 years ago. Here, you will learn about the process of cotton weaving from the villagers – from harvesting the cotton flowers to separating the seeds to the weaving. There are 12 steps in total.

For those who would like to try and weave the cloth, every step will be explained and demonstrated by the villagers. If you are traveling as a couple, don't miss the "couple weaving machine," where you can weave together at the same time. It is a ploy from the past to prevent the men from working outside of the village and to tighten the bond with their wives, as well. After learning how to weave, if you want beautiful, woven cotton clothes, you can also buy some, such as cloth bags, whole cloth rolls of woven cotton, and products from cotton, as well as souvenirs. Moreover, there are other activities you can take part in, such as making Lanna-style lamps or products from bamboo, and more.
